The Wildcat softball team throws 5 runs in the 5th inning of the National Championship to give them their 2nd National Championship in as many years. Both the Lady Vols and the Wildcats depended on Worth Sports products at the plate and in the field.

Memorial Day Thoughts

With the major league baseball season in full swing and many baseball fans rooting on their favorite teams in hopes of a pennant race and possibly a chance to see their favorite team play in October.

The recent passing of Memorial Day raised some reflection in many Americans minds. Often overlooked is the United States involvement in Iraq. Daily life for Americans goes on without thought of the American forces and the job they are doing in the gulf coast.

Lets reflect for a moment how the United States being at war affects our national pastime. Just prior to spring training in 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed and America was thrust into a war. Major league baseball could have gone unaffected by all this but fortunately it was not. Major league baseball player’s some in the early stages of their careers and some right in the prime of their careers stepped up to the plate for the good of their country. Many of these players sacrificed over 3 years of their baseball career with great pride and no regrets. We are not talking about average players who did this. The likes of Warren Spahn, Ted Williams, Enos Slaughter, Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, to name just a few.

To keep this in perspective how would Americans react if current Major league player’s such as Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, Joe Mauer, Jason Varitek, and Manny Rameriez signed up VOLUNTARILY to fight the war in Iraq??? It seems that this day in age PATRIOTISM by Americans with stature whether it is professional athletes, movie stars or whoever. They want to support the war but only from a DISTANCE!!! It is amazing how the times have changed over the years. Not always for the BETTER!!!

The Last American Ball Glove Manufacturer

This great country has lost much of it’s onshore manufacturing to other countries. But once in awhile you stumble over a hold out - a company that digs in and digs deep to continue to provide high quality goods that compete with any produced overseas. Not even a fire could stop this American Made Baseball and Softball Company from producing some of America’s finest gloves. On July 18^th 2006 a fire swept through the Nokona factory and burnt down the factory and the inventory inside of it. The one thing the fire did not get was the great spirit of the people of Nokona TX, who have stepped up and are currently doing everything they can to get Nokona back on top of the glove making industry. Making gloves since 1934 these gloves have a feel of their own. They offer such leathers as Kangaroo, Buckskin, Buffalo and combinations of these. This innovative way of producing ball gloves give the customers the option of getting the glove that is best suited for their likes and needs.

The fast pitch Catchers Mitts are known for being the best of the best. In particularly the CM275Kcatcher’s mitt and the CM275. Both are 13.00″ double stitched deep pocketed Professional Models. The CM275K uses Kangaroo leather that gives a very soft feel on the inside with a strong structured feeling on the outside. Once this glove breaks in, it is a Catchers dream. The CM275 is made from Walnut Leather that is a little stiffer than the Kangaroo, but still gives the player a glove that they will enjoy for years. The deep closed web on both of these gems is reinforced with double lacing to ensure the pocket. These two models are made for the serious player who wants and expects the best from their mitt.

Made in the USA, Nokona is currently rebuilding their factory while still making these hand crafted gloves where ever they can. The one constant is it is always in the US. 15 years ago even 10 years ago there where a hand full of companies still making gloves in the US. If you ask many adults about influences in their lives many will tell you that it was someone who taught them something that they were passionate about. Many athletes will bring up teachers or coaches they had as a child. Almost everyone who played baseball or softball growing up remembers how influential a coach was to them.

If you have a background, talent, or knowledge about baseball or softball, no matter how trivial you might think it is maybe throwing, catching, hitting, running. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is passing the knowledge on to them. It is a very rewarding feeling for you but more importantly you can literally change a player’s life forever.

Some of the kids you are coaching right now may come back in 15-20 years and tell you how much of an impact you had on them. That athlete may tell you how important you were to them and how you kept them from going down the wrong path in life. How rewarding would that be 15 -20 years from now? You never know at the time that you are coaching how much of an impact you can have on someone.

Keep this in mind the next time you have a chance to work with young athletes. It might just be you who changes a kid’s life forever and all it took was a little bit of your time. I would take that trade every day of the week!!!
